Angkor Wat - Heritage of Humanity and World Wonder - Siem Reap Province

Developed: Early – Mid twelfth century C.E.

Religion: Hinduism

Ruler/Patron: Suryavarman II

Style: Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat which actually signifies 'City Temple' is a Hindu sanctuary complex manufactured to repeat the sky on earth. Built for King Suryavarman II in the early twelfth century, it is the best-safeguarded sanctuary and is the one and only to have remained a huge religious focus since its establishment; first Hindu, devoted to Vishnu, then Buddhist. The sanctuary is the encapsulation of the high traditional style of Khmer construction modeling. This grand sanctuary joins two essential arrangements of Khmer sanctuary structural planning; the sanctuary mountain and the later galleried sanctuary, in light of ahead of schedule South Indian Hindu construction modeling. Developed inside of a channel and an external divider 3.6 kilometers (2.2 miles) in length with three rectangular displays, each raised over the following, it is intended to speak to Mount Meru, home of the devas in Hindu mythology.

At the focal point of the sanctuary stands a quincunx of towers. Dissimilar to most Angkorian sanctuaries, Angkor Wat is situated toward the west and this has researchers separated as to its centrality. The sanctuary is appreciated for the glory and amicability of the building design. The broad bas-reliefs and the various gatekeeper spirits decorating its dividers serve as confirmation of the solid Khmer religious convictions.
